Year 12 Student Kira Crabtree has been offered a place on the Oxford University UNIQ Summer course. Competition for places is tough with just over 5000 students applying and only 875 places awarded.
Kira was told about the opportunity to apply by Mrs Knapton Director of Sixth Form at Tadcaster. Kira saw that her subject was running so decided to give it a try and was absolutely thrilled when she received an email offering her a place.
Kira will go down to Oxford for a week, staying in one of the colleges. The course is funded by Oxford and includes all travelling expenses. The week will be very intense; Kira will attend an academic programme during the day and social activities in the evenings. She will get first-hand experience of life at university, meet like-minded people and gain deeper understanding of a subject that really interests her.
Kira will be studying Classical Archaeology and Ancient History. Throughout the week she will attend lectures and take part in seminars or debates on a wide range of topics, from the trade and production of Pompeii to the gory details of the Battle of Plataea. There will also be workshops and a chance to go behind the scenes at the Ashmolean Museum during a handling session, looking at and discussing objects from the ancient civilisations you have been studying. Throughout the week Kira will need to prepare a short essay for a tutorial with one of the tutors.
Mrs Knapton commented saying that “as a school we are extremely proud of Kira, she has done incredibly well to be offered a chance to experience life at one of the top universities”
Aiming high and applying to top universities like Oxford can seem a little daunting. Throughout the week ambassadors and staff will be around to give guidance and answer any questions. There will also be a range of dedicated sessions throughout the week providing information on all aspects of the application process.
UNIQ aims to provide experiences through its spring, summer and Digital programmes to nearly 2000 students in 2018.
