In a break with tradition, students at Tadcaster Grammar School have voted for two girls to lead the school forward as their new Head Students.
Madeleine McLure and Penelope Meek, both Year 12 students, were voted by their peers to take up their positions for the next academic year, roles usually taken by a Head Boy and Head Girl.
“Having both been Fairfax House Captains for the year 2016-17, we are thrilled to have the opportunity to work together again as TGS’s first all-female Head Student team!” said Maddy.
“During our time as House Captains, we organised some memorable charity events and fundraisers, such as the Christmas Food Hamper Appeal and Red Nose Day, and this is something we intend to continue as Head Students,” she added.
“Charity is certainly at the forefront of both our minds and we have already begun planning our school wide fundraiser for sanitary projects for the homeless, a project we are truly excited about,” said Penny.
Mentoring of younger years is equally as important to both girls, having been something they have enjoyed taking part in during their first year of Sixth Form and they hope to introduce a programme which will further encourage and support students taking advantage of this great resource.
“Ultimately, we intend to leave our mark on TGS, a community which has served us both so well!” exclaimed Maddy.
“Both students are committed to working hard and striving to do well and will be great role models for our students to look up to,” said Director of Sixth Form, Mrs Ros Knapton. “They both have a strong sense of commitment to the school and will be fantastic representatives for our student community,” she added.
