“My DofE has made me realise I can be whoever I want to be.”
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (commonly abbreviated DofE), is a youth awards programme founded in the United Kingdom in 1956 by Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, that has since expanded to 144 nations.
The DofE gives students the chance to do something completely new and improve on things they are already doing. It takes them out of their comfort zone and into a place where they can push themselves and have amazing new experiences. They will build confidence, resilience, skills for work and friendship groups. And they will have a brilliant time doing it.
Looking forward, the DofE can help students to carve out a better future. Colleges, universities and employers regard a DofE Award highly so it will help to open the right doors.
The award is open to students from Year 9 onwards. This year is a record year for students taking on the DofE award with a total of 204 from TGS and Sherburn High School. The conversion rates are one of the highest if not the highest at 70% in the UK. The process usually starts in early Sept/October when the registration letters are posted on the parent’s letters home page.
Looking forward to expedition training at TGS, the Bronze award training began on March 9th followed by a second session in April.
Silver and Gold students started their training in February.
Each year there is an Awards ceremony at Selby Abbey for those who have completed Bronze and Silver.
Achieving the Gold Award is a big deal. It shows that students have the skills, determination and mentality to really succeed. So it’s only right that they get a proper celebration of their achievement. The Gold Award Presentations take place at St James’s Palace in London. Also there is an option for Gold participants to go to Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh to collect their awards.
